The 2022 VJMC 'Gathering'

Covid has certainly had a big effect on all our lives over the past couple of years with many routine activities taking a back seat to Covid concerns. Whilst our daily and weekly Covid concerns have been front and centre it has also had an effect on many annual activities. Concerts, festivals, family gatherings and rallies have fallen by the way side as uncertainty reigns. Amongst all of this Judy, Angela and Ross managed to pull off the next best thing to a Rally, a gathering. Whilst it was done at short notice, it certainly struck a chord with a good number of people who booked into motels in Feilding from far and wide for a VJMC get together. From all accounts a great Friday night warmup saw the 'The Gathering' off to a good start. A ride was organised for the Saturday morning with thirty or so individuals meeting at the Feilding Railway Station carpark at 11am ready for a ride to a lunch date at the Apiti Tavern. The route taken was a familiar path for the locals which was up through the Pohangina Valley following the Manawatu Scenic Route and then a slight detour to the tavern. The only casualty was Roger's lovely little Benelli 2C's pistons that needed a rest from going up and down and it ended up in a farmers shed for collection the following day. The joys of running classic bikes!

The Apiti Tavern was a very busy place and money could have been made from the parking meters if they were in working condition! It has become a destination in its own right since being taken over a year or so ago with a chef now in charge. Lunch was followed up with a ride around the rest of the Manawatu Scenic Route and then back to Feilding to prepare for the evening activities. By all accounts The Strongroom Restaurant provided a fitting gastronomical finale to the day and some discussions went on well into the later parts of the evening.

A big thank you to Angela, Judy and Ross for organising 'The Gathering' and let's all hope things get back to normal for the 2023 VJMC Rally.

February EoMR 2022

It was great turnout for our February EoMR with a very cosmopolitan mix of bikes. Good to see Roger back up from Levin on his trusty little Benelli 2C and Paul giving his Kawasaki H2 another outing. Warren had his Suzuki RGV 250SP out for a spin after sorting out a few radiator problems. Ross's lovely candy red Cobra seems to be running really nicely now, although he says it still has an intense thirst for the amber liquid. Good to see Grant out on his Suzuki GT250 with his colour matched T500 friend out being fettled by Rich. It is amazing how different a reconditioned motor's tuning is to its former worn out self! Another bike of note was Glen who decided his Ducat Desmosedici needed at outing, and what a treat that was. The little girl in Ashhurst who blocked her ears as we went passed wasn't of the same mind but for a machine from 2007/8 the technology it is incredible. No wonder it is already an appreciating classic. Bruce also brought along his latest purchase, a very sparkly Yamaha XJ 1300. A very nice bike that some say out Bandits a Bandit? With a few cosmetics on his H2 at the painters being redone, Al had his trusty Harley Sportster out for a spin. The other 'Bears' bikes included Ray on his BMW R850, Dave on his Guzzi, Bruce on Beemer 800. Rounding this off was the GSR and Ian on his W650.

We decided on a run out to the east after heading out to Ashhurst, Vally Road, Colyton, Makino Road, Stanway, Halcombe and into Feilding for our cafe stop. The Rosebowl is a popular destination for the crew with its space for parking out the back and its great food and beverages. The conversation around the table agreed that the run was a good one for the 'classic bikes' with a manageable pace and distance over some interesting and not too busy backroads. After the cafe some of us popped around to Ross's place to lend a hand with an engine extraction. He is currently working on some lovely bikes at the moment with the Kawasaki S3 nearly there and an RD350 nearly all there as well. He has been busy!
A great EoMR, and looking forward to the VJMC 'gathering' this coming weekend.
See you there.
