East then East

East then East

Swiftly, swiftly, Gisborne township to the southwest died away
Sunrise sent its golden fingers westward into fields of hay
Warming road and early riders passing through Anaura Bay.

To the north Te Araroa spreads its pathway long and wide.
XJ 750 cools down, ticking from the heated ride.
East Cape broods, apart and windswept, high above the swirling tide.

East, then, east. Pohutukawa, Hicks Bay, beaches all aglow.
Hikurangi watching over all the travellers, fast and slow.
Even Yamahas of vintage may with other riders go.

Homewards through Te Urewera. Ancient, misty giants rise
Still, untouched, these Tuhoe pillars tell us of our deeper ties.
We will pass and they remain, reaching for some higher skies.
Even as new hopes and horrors stumble out of China.
